We all know the old horsepower/liter pissing contest, so what about the highest specific output for torque? To keep it simple lets stick to naturally aspired gas engines. Here's some of the front runners I've found:

No diesels? They'll trump all of these gas engines.

The 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage make a stonking 102.8lb-ft/l from a 5.3l NA V8 :)

Realistically and especially with torque you probably want to show average torque, not peak torque. Interesting study though. I like the Poncho 455. It doesn't have the highest specific output torque here based on advertised numbers of 500 ft lbs at 64.96 torque per liter, but it does make that number basically off idle to 5500 rpm.

you do a great disservice sticking to NA. the real fun in in boosted cars.

Saab B235R 2.3L 270Lbft of torque at 1900 rpms.
117.4 lbft per litre in a family sedan.

Ford's 1L EcoBoost: 148lbs of torques.

The 3rd column is what happens when you divide the torque figure (column 2) by the displacement figure (column 1). The 4th is the rpm said torque occurs at, I didn't label it because it's a pain in the but to edit tables.

Best torque/liter for turbo diesels would be cool as well, but ain't nobody got time for that.

naturally aspired diesel would have no chance against NA gas. I don't think turbo diesels would beat turbo gas either. I welcome being proved wrong though.

True, how early and flat the torque curve are the best measure, unfortunately there isn't a nice easy number for that. I'm not sure I'd say 5500rpm is 'just off idle'...

Ok that's some freak of nature stuff right there. A similar freak of nature though, is the lag-tastic Mitsubishi Evo FQ400's 400lb-ft out of a 2 liters. Even the normal Evo beats most turbo diesels I've found.

Compare the spectrum of oem turbodiesels as a whole, and they win.

in pharmacology (and maybe some physics disciplines as well) there is a measure called "area under the curve" or AUC.

this would be the "easiest" number that would describe what we want. unfortunately, we'd have to track down all of the curves for each of these cars, which would probably not be the easiest exercise.

OMC 2 stroke V8 : 3.6L, 340 ft-lb

94 tq/L

I think the real outliers are going to be 'unique' NA configurations. Rotary, 2 stroke, gas with meth injection. All the 'rule benders' for this test.

2006 2.4 litre Formula one Toyota RVX-06 V8 engine produces 552 kW (740 bhp) at 19,000 rpm and outputs 274 Nm of torque.

2.4L/200lbft

83.3 lbft/litre

kindof a letdown for 'pinnacle' engineering for it to score closer to a mustang than a ferrari but understandable given the car's weight and purpose.

How about 546 lbs/ft over a 3 litre? At 2krpm.

Granted, I have no idea on the plateau on your admittedly nice Merc diesel there.

Edit: Wow, that bluetec - http://autoweek.com/article/car-re… cited at 369 lb/ft at 1.6krpm. That's awesome.

I read this and it hurt my head. You mean E63? Because I had an E36 M3, and it was US and didn't have the gobs of power our European brethren promised us.

EDIT: I see the displacement you noted was indeed 3.6L. I did not know that Mercedes had an E36! TO THE INTERWEBS FOR RESEARCH

The Opel Kadett E GSi S (stands for Superboss) 16v held the world record for the most torque per litre (114 Nm per litre) for a naturally aspirated car until 2009 being beaten by the Ferrari 458 (117 Nm per litre).

Boom there you go! 4 banger FTW!
